Theater Kikker Wintercollectie

Theater Kikker presents its winter collection

‘A festival with the best of the new year.’ With that promise, Theater Kikker on the Ganzenmarkt has announced its ‘winter collection‘: a collection of the strangest, rudest, and most beautiful performances by young theater makers. Nine striking performances have been selected especially for this collection to create a diverse fringe program.

Located on the Ganzemarkt since 1980, Theater Kikker has – since its foundation in the 1970s – offered a multifaceted program full of contemporary theatre, modern dance, youth theater, and new (especially composed or electronic) music. In its program, Theater Kikker focuses above all on its own city: Utrecht-based creators, groups and local festivals are very welcome. With the ultimate living room atmosphere and special performances, it’s always a good time at Theater Kikker. And certainly now with the return of the ‘winter collection’.

On Tuesday 6 December, the Jens Maurits Orchestra will kick off the collection with ‘The Blogpera’. ‘The Blogpera’ is a witty, multimedia performance that explores the origins of music with the help of a sample-spitting ‘memory machine’. The audience gets to choose and click and unleash stories, dance, videos, and scientific conversations via a digital interface. Accompanied by the virtuosic jazz musicians from the Jens Maurits Orchestra, you discover why people are so eager to make and listen to music.

But there’s more! In ‘MachoMacho’, Igor Vrebac uncovers the worries of the macho man. Marijn Brussaard attacks this same theme with plenty of testosterone and even more violence in ‘Forever Young’. In ‘Let me be your hero baby’, theater maker Birgit Welink is on the hunt for her inner hero, with the help of a team of women. And you won’t have to miss Eva Line de Boer, the winner of the BNG Bank New Theater Maker Prize: she’s presenting ‘Dit gebeurt allemaal tegelijk’ (‘This is all happening at the same time’), a parade of human emotions that is absurd yet moving.

Definitely enough to look forward to now that the days are getting colder and shorter. The ‘winter collection’ is on from Tuesday the 6th until Saturday the 10th, and ends every day with the talk show ‘Chez Jolie’ by program director Jolie Vreeburg. She discusses the performance with the audience and theater makers. There’s also an exhibition in the foyer by students of theater design at the HKU.
