Smaakmakers Tour Explore Utrecht 11

A flavourful bike ride with the Smaakmakerstour

Want to explore some of Utrecht’s tastiest restaurants on the bike? We were invited to experience this during the Smaakmakerstour. We’re fan and we’ll tell you why in this article!

The concept

The Smaakmakerstour works as followed: you’ll jump on the bike with a small group and go on a bike tour past 5 different restaurants all throughout Utrecht. At every stop you get a small dish and a tast of an (alcoholic) drink. You’ll work off those calories in no time 😉

The founder of the Smaakmakerstour and our guide Marike, told us that the idea for the tour came to her when she did a foodtour in Vietnam. She tasted the tastiest dishes from the back of a moped. Why shouldn’t this work in Utrecht? But she added a nice Dutch touch; the tour would be on a bike of course!

Stop 1: Kantien in Welgelegen

We started off at Kantien with an alcohol-free cocktail made with smoked tea and basil. On top of that we got to try a tower of delight, consisting of two types of beets, creamy goat’s cheese, basil and topped with puff pastry and a chestnut crumble!

Stop 2: InStock in Lombok

At Instock we got to settle down in the garden, where the concept of Instock was explained to us. We got to enjoy a nice ‘pieper’-beer (made with potatoes!) and a delicious kimchi burrito with pickled vegetables. We even got an extra bottle of beer as a gift to take home!

Stop 3: Le Jardin on the Mariaplaats

Le Jardin served us a dish that was almost entirely made with vegetables. A cauliflower mousse with olives and a coffee crumble, delicious! To accompany it, we got a little glass of wine that elevated the flavour of the cauliflower and softened it at the same time. A perfect combination!

Stop 4: Goesting in Wittevrouwen

Next up is veteran Goesting, a restaurant that has put its stamp on Utrecht for over 16 years. At Goesting we got a truly classic dish, with sea bass, Mediterranean sea lavender, vongole and a creamy sauce. A tasteful combination of  the beautiful things that the seaside has to offer.

Stop 5: Piatto on the Vredenburg

At Piatto we got our last dish (well actually three): a selection of three different bruschetta’s! All three very different flavour combinations, but all equally delightful. The cherry on top of the entire tour was the delicious drink we got at Piatto, made with homemade limoncello and prosecco.
