Fort aan de Klop

Did you find all of those eggs last week? You don’t miss one, now do you? Those chocolate bunnies are probably already eaten.. And the dead Easter branch has been put by the trash. Or it hasn’t and is staying as long as the miserable looking Christmas tree did. So it was Easter. Holidays often revolve around family. So my in-laws invited me to have an Easter brunch at Fort aan de Klop. Fun! A place where I’ve never been before.

The fort is located at the Vecht, in the direction of Oud Zuilen. It is a part of the New Dutch Waterline. Briefly: a military defence line from the 19th century. I believe that they had to fight the Spaniards and Frenchmen here. The guardhouse which dates from 1851 is now a nice brasserie. Where I enjoyed my Eatser brunch, a buffet that just did not seem to end, so much food. Fresh pancakes, scrambled(easter)eggs, ham, brie, cinnamon bread with butterrrr… And we started of with a glass of bubbly wine! Not bad. The brasserie is open every day of the week from 10h. till 17h. From the 25th of april you are also welcome to enjoy dinner. All the meat products are biological and are supplied by Slagerij de Groene weg, naturally good! In the old artillery sheds there are venues and a group accommodation for you to rent. And then and there you can daydream about the soldiers, man in uniform in battle..

Last summer-vacation there were also Summer-evening-BBQ’s and because of the success you can enjoy meals in the garden again this year. In this garden you will enjoy a stroll while trying to hind from the sun that is burning your head. However, garden, all the surroundings are green, I had a great time with some goats in the garden. Give them a piece of the hedge, the love it, apparently.

Saturday the 18th of April the festival “Linie in Lichterlaaie” will take place. Earlier held at different fortresses in and around Utrecht, a light spectacle including theatre and music. You can visit workshops, such as a session on how to rap. You could try to rap about forts and knights, bombs and fights. Well, that didn’t sound half bad. A historian will tell all about the history of the fort. There will be live music, a Saint Martins’ horse will make his entrance and Free runners are going to do some spectacular stunts. If that doesn’t sound exiting, then I don’t know what does.

If you feeling like taking your kids to the fort, you should do so on Sunday the 26th of April during the “KinderKunst TheaterFestival2015”. Where the little ones from 4 till 12 can participate in workshops: theatre, music or arts. It is all there. Decorating Cupcakes, dancing lessons or percussion workshops. The entrance is free, you will only need to pay a small amount for the workshops and the profits will go to Make-A-Wish Nederland. I think that’s so cool! You’d almost wish you were a kid again.

Upcoming Activities at Fort de Klop:

  1. Linie in Lichterlaaie: 18th of April, 21:00h., free entrance
  2. KinderKunst TheaterFestival2015: 26th of April,12:00h.-17:00h., free entrance
