Where you would never expect, at the Europalaan behind the bus remise, is the recently opened – Gastronomy-Patisserie-Bar, called the Klub. The Klub is part of the Vechtclub XL. It claims to be the most advanced breeding ground of Utrecht with more than 50 workshops spaces, design studios, meeting rooms, a (stage) room and the restaurant Klub. A real creative incubator and this translates to the restaurant.
De Klub is a place where you can have breakfast, coffee and lunch. But in the evening the doors are open as well for you to enjoy dinner. A few days in advance they publish the Friday menu on their Facebook page. When I went to have dinner at the Klub, chicken was the star of the menu! I was very curious, would they also have chicken based dessert?
I was with a party of 4 people, one was a vegetarian. Fortunately, this wasn’t a problem and they provided, the products of the Vegetarian Butcher, a meatless alternative. The atmosphere of the restaurant is industrial, but cozy with white tiles against the walls and a nice big open kitchen/bar where the chefs were busy preparing the dishes. The operation and the kitchen brigade fit perfectly into the picture; beards and tattoos (the men) and casual buns (the ladies). As a starter we got duck liver (no chicken!) with a fried piece of chicken skin and a poached egg. Tasty! As a main dish we got chicken from the oven on a bed of ratatouille and potatoes fried in goose fat, too bad they were not vega-proof. But dessert made up for it: a piece of chocolate cake and a piece of lemon pie.
The three young founders of The Klub also do catering bookings. They did for example the breakfast catering (the breakfast klub) at the Best Kept Secret Festival and they are also catering at the festival Into The Great Wide Open. The Klub is located outside the center of Utrecht, the advantage is that you can easily park your car for free. Reservations are recommended for Friday night. I would say keep an eye on their facebook page, wait for a main ingredient that appeals to you and let the chefs surprise you!
